All About Us

Rescue Rangers was set up approx 16 years ago, to work a alongside Rotherham Dog Warden Service.

Fay and Christine were dog wardens and came across many people who could not afford to neuter their dogs, many roamed because they were not neutered and were picked up by the dog warden service.

Often people could not afford to claim the dogs, so it made sense to neuter the dogs to stop them roaming and to stop unwanted litters of puppies.

The Dog Warden Service decided to hold a Jumble Sale and put the proceeds into a neutering fund. When someone was advised to have their dog neutered and they could not afford it, the Dog Warden Service gave them a voucher towards half of the cost. It was hard work raising the funds but it was well worth it.

In the early years of being a dog warden we would often get calls about a bitch in season running the streets with a pack of male dogs after her. Today in 2007 we can't remember last time we got such a call.

At one of the Jumble Sales, we came up with the name "Rotherham Rescue Rangers".

There was also a need to help people to neuter cats, find homes for kittens and also to help feral cats and kittens in and around the area of Rotherham.

Today the Dogs Trust helps Rescue Rangers out with vouchers to have our rescued dogs neutered free of charge. They can also help people who are on certain benefits.

We think The Dogs Trust just about saved Rescue Rangers from going into the red, as when we applied for help from them we were down to our last couple of hundred pounds in the bank. We were finding it so hard to work full time and also raise the money in our spare time to help everyone that needed it.

What We Are Doing Now....

Rescue Rangers often pays towards the cost of treatment/operations for dogs in the dog pound ( Mount Pleasant  Kennels ) and we pay for stray dogs to be vaccinated so that other rescue centers will take the dogs. The kennels also raise money to help towards the cost, sometimes spending several hundred pounds on one dog and then we pass these dogs onto local sanctuaries including Thornberry, Rotherham Dog Rescue, Mayflower and Bark Rescue.

In Rotherham we are very lucky that we have a number of other rescue's that take in unwanted animals but Rescue Rangers is the ONLY ONE that we are aware of that offers help toward neutering pets for members of the general public. We manage to keep our out goings to the minimum by fostering cats and small animals in our own home's so we don't have the out goings that other sanctuary's have. It has never been our desire to have a animal sanctuary as we prefer to get the cats/kittens into family foster homes while we find them a permanent home. Also if we did have an animal centre we wouldn't have the funds left to continue with our neutering program which helps to keep the amount of unwanted animals down.

We have BIG plans for 2010 and will put as much money as possible into neutering schemes in our area:

People who are on a low income can get help towards neutering their dog for £30. Rescue Rangers may be able to help with this cost.

Cats Protection help with vouchers to neuter cats and Rescue Rangers will pay the rest.

In a recent project, Rescue Rangers helped to fund one of the Dog Wardens schemes on one estate in Rotherham and we have people who are very passionate about getting these animals neutered.

Approx 40 dogs were neutered

Approx 30 cats were neutered

Approx 4 rabbits were neutered

All helped by Dogs Trust/ Cats Protection and Rescue Rangers.
